ASA Joins OEMs in Support of National Information Policy Agreement Assures Repair Information

Washington, D.C. -- The Automotive Service Association (ASA) and the two major automotive manufacturer trade associations have joined together to improve repair information accessibility across the United States.

ASA, working with the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (AAM) and the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers (AIAM), announced its support of a national initiative to identify and resolve gaps in information and tools needed to maintain and repair light-duty cars and trucks following the new car warranty period.

This program began with a pilot initiative in Arizona, involving repair shop owners in that state.

ASA has been involved with a number of industry groups in an effort to improve the long-term plight of repairers. This has culminated in a formal dialogue and agreement with automobile manufacturers. As part of this national agreement, repairers and automobile manufacturers have agreed to participate in a National Automotive Service Task Force to assure access to information.

"The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, which is a founding member of the Arizona Pilot Program, fully supports the efforts of the National Automotive Service Task Force to enhance vehicle service. It is very important that independent service repairers have the tools and information necessary to continue providing high quality service on the vehicles of today and tomorrow, and we look forward to working with the Automotive Service Association in making vehicle service a priority," said Josephine S. Cooper, AAM's president and CEO.

ASA Mechanical Operations Committee Director Bill Filley commented, "It is certainly appropriate that this announcement occur during the most important week of the aftermarket industry. We believe this initiative with the vehicle manufacturers will assure the repair industry timely, cost-efficient access to repair information. We look forward to working with the manufacturers."

"The Association of International Automobile Manufacturers fully supports the National Automotive Service Task Force and its mission to improve information accessibility and foster good communications throughout the auto service industry. Ensuring that the service industry, including dealerships and the franchised and independent aftermarket shops, have the information and tools they need to service today's high tech vehicles is essential to maintaining customer satisfaction." said Tim MacCarthy, president and CEO of AIAM.

Bob Redding, ASA's Washington, D.C., representative stated, "We are hopeful that this joint initiative will produce the results necessary to alleviate the aftermarket's concern regardinng information availability. Independent repairers maintain the majority of vehicles repaired today. This necessitates an accurate flow of information. ASA believes this step is an investment in the future of independent repairers."
