Business Tools | Tuesday January 2 Progressive Names New CEOMAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio -- Progressive Corp. has announced that Peter B. Lewis will step down as chief executive officer after 35 years. Lewis, 66, was arrested last January 5 in New Zealand with nearly 5 ounces of marijuana and marijuana resin. He was released without conviction. Glenn M. Renwick, who has been chief executive of insurance operations for the company since the beginning of the year, has become president and CEO effective January 1, 2001. "The achievement of an effective management transition has long been my goal. The transition which we announce has effectively been in place throughout this very difficult year," Lewis said. Renwick joined the Company in 1986 as auto product manager for Florida and developed the selling of car insurance through a widely advertised telephone service. Progressive is one of the nation's largest auto insurance companies.
