ARA Members Celebrate Earth Day Worldwide

Fairfax, VA -- On April 22, thousands of professional automotive recyclers celebrated Earth Day, recycling and the notion of buying recycled auto parts. Almost 2,000 ARA members worldwide participated in various Earth Day events to help raise consumer awareness of the environmental and economic benefits of automotive recycling.

This year, to promote Earth Day, ARA changed the idea of its annual Earth Day poster, incorporating a poster contest for the children of ARA members. The winning entrants comprise this year's Earth Day poster, which will be distributed to all ARA members. The theme, "Seeing the World Through Their Eyes" gives a perspective of what younger children think of Earth Day and the value of protecting their/our environment.

"We are trying to remind people that they can do so much more than merely recycle their glass bottles and cans," said Bill Steinkuller ARA Executive Vice President. "Many other products that we use can be recycled, including things that may not fit in your recycle bin, such as the family car."

This year's Earth Day effort, sponsored by ARA along with its affiliate chapter associations, had a goal of sending a message that auto recyclers are an important leader in conserving our planet's resources, reducing waste, creating jobs and strengthening our world's economy.

Every year, millions of vehicles are recycled and the parts are reused, thereby conserving natural resources that would otherwise be used to make new replacement parts. Automotive recycling also eliminates any additional pollution that may occur when new parts are made and further preserves precious landfill space.

The automotive recycling industry is predominantly comprised of small business facilities responding to the economic and environmental challenge of recycling millions of retired vehicles annually. Rather than merely crushing wrecked, abandoned and mechanically disabled automobiles, today's modern, professional automotive recycler maximizes a car's true market value, recycling the vast majority of the vehicles retired each year. The raw materials harvested when recycling old cars can be used to make new vehicles.

By purchasing quality recycled parts, consumers can help build markets for products made out of recycled steel, glass, paper, plastic and aluminum materials - like the items placed in bins or at the drop-off facilities, as well as the important aspect of substantial savings for parts.

Founded in 1943, the Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA) has represented an industry dedicated to the efficient removal and reuse of automotive parts, and the proper disposal of inoperable motor vehicles. With programs such as the certified auto recycler program (CAR), and other partnerships with automotive manufacturers, automotive recycling will continue to provide consumers with quality, low cost alternatives for vehicle replacement parts, while preserving our environment for tomorrow.
