Outgoing ASA Chairman Recognizes Five Individuals

Bedford, Texas -- The Automotive Service Association (ASA) Chairman's Award of Excellence is presented annually by the outgoing ASA board chairman to recognize individuals for their contributions to the association and the industry. During the association's recent annual convention, the 2000-2001 chairman, Howard Lewis, presented five individuals with the Award of Excellence.

Sheri Hamilton, executive director of ASA-Missouri/Kansas was honored for her "leadership and commitment," Lewis said, which enabled the expansion of the former ASA-Kansas City local affiliate into an affiliate representing two states. Additionally, her oversight of the tremendously successful Vision Hi-Tech Training and Expo trade show was highlighted by Lewis when presenting Hamilton her award.

Galen Poss, president of Hanley-Wood Show Management and director of the International Autobody Congress and Exposition (NACE), received a Chairman's Award for his involvement with NACE since its inception in 1983. In that year, there were fewer than 2,000 attendees. Last year's show marked the seventh consecutive year that attendance topped 30,000. Poss is the one person most responsible for the growth and success of NACE, Lewis said.

Tom Layman, owner of Multistate Transmission in Waterford, Mich., was recognized by Lewis for "his great work as a member of the ASA Mechanical Division Operations Committee and for being an outstanding representative of the automotive service industry in his community." In his community, Layman has served on the school board for New Directions Institute, a development school for at-risk students whose educational needs are not being met in the public schools.

Bob Poole, a new member recruiter on the ASA National staff, was honored by Lewis for his 16 years with ASA. "You would be hard pressed to find a more dedicated and loyal ASA employee," Lewis said of Poole. "He is diligent, honest, persistent, and always forthcoming with great ideas to improve ASA's contribution to the industry."

Bob O'Connor, president of R.L. O'Connor and Associates, Inc., received a Chairman's Award because he chose a career that enables him to make a positive difference in automotive service, Lewis said. Through his Automotive Management Institute courses, O'Connor has helped thousands of shop owners and managers do their jobs better. "Through the 20 groups he organizes, he makes it possible for shop owners to improve their operations, increase profits and achieve their professional goals," Lewis said.
