ASA Collision Division Representative Meets with Manufacturers

BEDFORD, TEXAS -- Mike West, owner of Southtowne Auto Rebuild, Inc. in Tukwila, Wash., and a member of the Automotive Service Association (ASA) Collision Division Operations Committee, met with representatives from DaimlerChrysler AG, Ford Motor Co., and General Motors Corp. last month to discuss various concerns on behalf of ASA collision division members.

In separate meetings with each manufacturer, the topics addressed by West included:

  • Improving training and access to repair information for independent collision shops.
  • Changing the composition of plastic parts so they may be recycled rather than going into landfills.
  • Establishing a communication channel which would enable repairers to provide information on "problem repairs" to manufacturers as such repairs are encountered.

In addition to the meetings with manufacturer representatives, West toured the body shop test facilities at DaimlerChrysler and GM.

"The meetings were productive and can be enhanced," West said. By making this contact and visiting the manufacturers, ASA is furthering relationships that will prove beneficial to collision shops faced with repairing increasingly complex automobiles.

"The manufacturers understand their vehicles on the road are 'rolling advertisements' for their companies," West said, which translates to their need to provide complete repair procedures to collision shops.

"We will build on these initial meetings and continue to grow and strengthen the relationships between ASA and the manufacturers," West said.
