Business Tools | Thursday July 19 ASA Reports: U.S. Representative Introduces Auto Insurance LegislationWashington, D.C. -- U.S. Representative Dick Armey, R-Texas, has introduced, H.R. 1704, the Auto Choice Reform Act 2001. The bill has bi-partisan support from Reps. Christopher Cox, R-Calif., and James Moran, D-Va. Auto Choice's objectives are to achieve savings for consumers and reduce litigation by offering policyholders a choice among policies with different levels of liability coverage. The legislation will give drivers a choice between their state's auto insurance program and the personal protection option. The personal protection option allows a motorist to be compensated by his or her own insurance company without proving fault. Under this option motorists may sue for lost wages and medical costs above their policy limits, but not for pain and suffering except in cases where a drunk driver, drug abuse or intentional endangerment injured an insured. The Joint Economic Committee conducted a study called Auto Choice: Impact on Cities and the Poor. The study finds that among the problems with the current insurance system are, "premiums are too high and victims with serious injuries rarely receive full compensation." According to the latest study done by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 1999, the average person paid $683 in auto insurance premiums. ©2000 Collision Repair Industry INSIGHT | FEATURED INSIGHT Supports the NABC! |
