Business Tools | Tuesday September 18 Retired DuPont Chairman Irving S. Shapiro DiesWILMINGTON, Del. -- Irving S. Shapiro, 85, an attorney who became the first chief executive of the giant DuPont chemical company without a technical background or ties to the DuPont family, died on September 13 after a two-month battle with cancer. The son of Lithuanian immigrants, Shapiro grew up in Minnesota and practiced law before the U.S. Supreme Court with the U.S. Justice Department from 1943 to 1951, before leaving to join DuPont's legal department in Wilmington.
