NABC Announces PRIDE Award Winners

St. Charles, IL -- The National Auto Body Council has announced the winners of this year's PRIDE Awards. Started in 1995, the PRIDE Award program is designed to recognize businesses, individuals, and groups who distinguish themselves and the industry by performing humanitarian and/or service deeds outside of their normal job responsibilities.

The winners are: Rob Quillen, ADP Sales Representative from Lincoln, NE; Dave and Alex Carney, Owners of Tualatin Auto Body, Tualatin Oregon; Salvatore Licitra, Educator, Adelphia, NJ; Jeff Hendler, President JD Hendler Associates, Pasco WA; and Mitchell International, San Diego CA.

Rob Quillen, of ADP, had the opportunity to meet a United pilot, Jason Dahl, while sitting together on a flight to Newark, NJ on September 10th. They talked about their mutual hero, NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon. Jason Dahl spoke of his son Matt's dream to someday actually meet Jeff Gordon. Rob invited them to attend the upcoming NASCAR race, the Protection One 400, in Kansas City. The next day, September 11th, Jason Dahl was the pilot of United flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania.

"I absolutely made it a mission to get Jason's son to see Jeff Gordon," says Quillen. He wrote the Dahl family, extending his invitation to them and pulled several strings to make all the arrangements. The results: Matt Dahl came to Kansas City, attended the chapel service and drivers' meeting with Jeff Gordon, spent time on Pit Row and in the "catbird seat" to watch the race, a race that Gordon won and dedicated to Matt. Quillen reflected back on the events, "I believe God put Jason on that flight to tell me the dream for Matt, and he put me on the flight next to Jason so I could hear the dream."

As Heather Merrill put it on yourtruehero.org, "He (Rob Quillen) is the embodiment of what America and the world should strive to be." For this, Rob Quillen received one of the PRIDE Awards.

Dave and Alex Carney, owners of Tualatin Auto Body in Oregon, are involved in many activities in their community. They have extensive involvement in the DARE program in their area from painting a DARE car to purchasing Halloween trick or treat bags for elementary school children. Continuous participation in organizing the Newman-Birden free football camp for youth through high school; including flying out NFL players, host exchange students, donate to community sports. Dave and Alex were honored as the Businesspersons of the Year for the Tualatin Chamber. The Carney's received their award in the "Shop" category.

Salvatore "Silvie" Licitra has had a lifelong involvement in both the collision industry and education. He was a New York City public high school teacher, as well as a mentor for new teachers. In the 50's he compiled a trade analysis documenting job operations on the needed skills to repair and refinish vehicles, this course was used at the Brooklyn Automotive High School evening division. Silvie is the past business and technical training editor for ABRN. He has authored the following books and handbooks "They Smiled When You Arrived - Don't Let 'Em Cheer When You Go", "There's No Hokus Pokus When It Comes To Teaching", "Charm The Buggers", and "Training Course for Auto Body Repairman". Salvatore Licitra has an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Business Management. Mr. Licitra received his award in the "Individual" category.

Jeff Hendler, President of J D Hendler Associates of Pasco, Washington, not only goes above and beyond to help raise money for every good cause we in the industry address. He has also organized a golf outing to help "The Wellness Community" in Walnut Creek and Lake Tahoe to raise money to assist people battling cancer. Mr. Hendler accepts no fees for service or reimbursement of expenses for the wonderful things he has done, he truly is concerned about those less fortunate than others. Mr. Hendler also received his award in the "Individual" category.

Mitchell International, of San Diego, California, has launched the Mitchell Cares Program. This program provides easy access for employees to recurring volunteer opportunities in the community in conjunction with San Diego Cares. The volunteer work includes packaging food for the needy, preparing sack lunches for delivery to AIDS patients, serving meals for the homeless at a church, and assisting disabled children in therapeutic horseback riding. Mitchell received their award in the "Company" category.

The award winners were chosen by an independent panel of judges representing a cross section of the various industry segments and appointed by the NABC Board of Directors. The National PRIDE Award winners were presented with their awards at the Industry Night of Achievement at NACE, November 28, 2001 in Las Vegas.

"We had a great group of candidates who were nominated this year. Of course, that makes our job that much more difficult," said Stacy Bartnik, Consultant with Carter and Carter International, and Chair of the PRIDE Award Committee. "These PRIDE Award winners enable us to showcase some of the great things that are going on in communities across this country. We are an industry that cares, an industry that gives back to our communities. We like to share these kinds of highlights so others may be inspired to get more active in their own communities."
