Dr. Mae Jemison Elected to Valspar Board

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Valspar Corporation has announced that Dr. Mae Jemison has been elected to the Valspar Board of Directors.

Dr. Jemison made history when she became the first African American woman to travel into space aboard the space shuttle Endeavor in September 1992 as the science mission specialist. She earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Stanford University and an M.D. from Cornell University.

In 1993, she left NASA and founded The Jemison Group, Inc., a private company that focuses on projects that integrate social science issues into the design of technologies. Dr. Jemison heads a new company, BioSentient Corporation, a medical technology company that develops and markets mobile equipment worn to monitor the body's vital signs and train people to respond favorably to stressful situations. Dr. Jemison's current work focuses on the beneficial integration of science and technology into our everyday lives.

Currently serving on the faculty of Dartmouth College as professor of environmental studies, Dr. Jemison also directs the Jemison Institute for Advancing Technology in Developing Countries, which focuses on sustainable development. Dr. Jemison started The Earth We Share(TM) (TEWS), an international science camp for students that seeks to build critical thinking and problem solving skills to produce adults fully capable of contributing beneficially to society.

Recently elected as a member of the Institute of Medicine, Dr. Jemison also serves on the Board of Directors of Scholastic, Inc. and The Keystone Center. Most recently, Dr. Jemison released her autobiography, Find Where the Wind Goes: Moments from My Life.

Rich Rompala, Valspar's Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "Dr. Jemison has an impressive record as a scientist, academician and astronaut, and will provide a fresh perspective to our Board governance. We are pleased to welcome her to our Board of Directors."
