Business Tools | Friday March 8 3M to Receive the Points of Light Foundation's 2001 Award for Excellence in Corporate Community ServiceST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Points of Light Foundation has recognized 3M and five other companies for their contributions and commitment to developing effective volunteer programs. Former President George H. Bush will present the award today in New York City. 3M employee volunteers, Bob Barton, Barbara Peterson and Bert Bridger, will represent 3M at the luncheon and accept the award on 3M's behalf. "3M volunteers are committed to education and have made significant contributions to their communities through science and math encouragement," said Robert K. Goodwin, president and CEO of the Points of Light Foundation. The award is part of an ongoing effort by the Foundation to encourage companies to make a difference through volunteering. Founded in 1990, the Points of Light Foundation is a non-partisan, nonprofit organization devoted to promoting volunteerism and is also the nation's leading volunteer resource. "3M is proud and honored to receive the Points of Light Award for Excellence in Corporate Community Service," said David Powell, president, 3M Foundation. "Our employees' innovative spirit is what sets 3M apart. It is that spirit and our legacy of employee and retiree volunteerism and community partnerships that have helped us earn this recognition." Other companies receiving the 2001 award include: Cargill, EDS, Washington Mutual, MTV and Legacy Health Systems. 3M's Contributions Program is made up of cash and in-kind gifts and is bolstered by employee and retiree volunteerism.
