Australia's Wattyl Taken Over by BASF

Australian paint manufacturer Wattyl Ltd. has agreed to sell its 49 percent shareholding in BASF Wattyl Coatings Pty. Ltd. to BASF Coatings AG, in a deal worth about A$5.8 million.

The agreement extends to the sale and license of related technology. The Australian company said the arrangement reflects its strategy to focus on core business areas such as architectural, decorative and select industrial coatings. However, Wattyl has agreed to toll manufacture various products on behalf of BASF.

BASF Coatings AG, part of German chemicals group BASF AG, formed a joint venture with Wattyl in 1999. The relationship allowed Wattyl to market Glasurit automotive refinish coatings technology in Australia.
