U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Subcommittee Holds Hearing on FreedomCAR

The U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations recently heard testimony on future implementation of FreedomCAR.

FreedomCAR was initiated by the Bush administration to develop hydrogen fuel cells that will provide the technology necessary to create vehicles that do not run on gasoline and do not emit harmful emissions.

On Jan. 9, 2002, U.S. Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham joined with top executives from DiamlerChrysler AG, General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. to introduce FreedomCAR. The CAR in FreedomCAR stands for Cooperative Automotive Research and Freedom stands for the goals of the program:

  • Freedom from petroleum dependence.
  • Freedom from pollutant emissions.
  • Freedom for Americans to choose the kind of vehicle they want to drive.
  • Freedom to obtain fuel affordably and conveniently.
