Business Tools | Friday August 9 DuPont Names Uma Chowdhry Vice President of Central Research and DevelopmentDuPont has named Dr. Uma Chowdhry to the newly created position of vice president of Central Research and Development. In February, DuPont aligned its businesses into five market- and technology-focused growth platforms. Chowdhry will focus on providing DuPont's customers and growth platforms with science-based solutions and services to meet their needs. Chowdhry, 54, has a blend of experience in both business and technology leadership roles. She joined DuPont in 1977 and worked in CR&D for 11 years in research and management roles. From 1988-99, Chowdhry held various business and technology leadership positions in electronics and chemicals. Since 1999 she has served as director of the company's corporate engineering technologies. "Consistent with our long-term strategy, DuPont science and technology initiatives are sharply focused on market needs," Chief Science and Technology Officer Thomas M. Connelly said. "The breadth of Uma's knowledge and experience in both business and technology arenas is ideal for identifying and providing science and technology solutions to meet market needs. We are confident that Uma's leadership will accelerate our transformation to sustainable growth through integrated science." Born and raised in Mumbai, India, Chowdhry came to the United States in 1968 with a B.S. in physics from Institute of Science, University of Bombay. She earned her M.S. from the California Institute of Technology in 1970. Chowdhry was awarded her Ph.D. in materials science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1976. For her efforts ranging from catalysts to superconductors, Chowdhry was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1996. She is on the board of directors of the Industrial Research Institute, of the National Inventors' Hall of Fame and the Department of Energy's board for laboratory operations.
