Business Tools | Wednesday September 11 DuPont Performance Coatings Seminar Provides Auto Maker Reps with Paint Technology UpdateRepresentatives from eight auto manufacturers recently attended a DuPont Performance Coatings (DPC) seminar on current and future trends in original equipment coatings. The 19 class participants included engineers, technical and training specialists, and platform and development managers. Held at the DPC facility in Troy, Mich., the two-day seminar focused on paint technology and application procedures at automotive OE facilities. All of the participants praised the seminar. Said Brian Dotterer, new materials and technologies development manager for General Motors, "Once again, DPC greatly exceeded expectations. They provided us with a lot of information in a short amount of time. And the fact that they could bring together that many people from so many manufacturers says a lot about their standing as an OEM paint supplier." DaimlerChrysler's Darryl Porter echoed those thoughts. "The seminar was really excellent, and the instructor, Gary Jepsen, was extremely knowledgeable," said Porter, manager of paint platform service support, dealer technical operations. He and Dotterer both noted that the chance to interact with representatives from other auto manufacturers, made possible by DPC's position as the world's leading supplier of automotive coatings, was invaluable. John Hughes, refinish paint technical specialist for Ford, said he gained new and valuable insight into exactly what happens on the paint line at auto assembly plants. Although he has attended other paint company-sponsored seminars, he had never been to one in which so many auto manufacturers were represented. "It was great to be with such a diverse group," Hughes said. For Kent Shepley, American Honda Motors product specialist for body and paint, the seminar was a real eye-opener. "I took 15 pages of notes in two days" he said. "The information on factory procedures was excellent. I think they condensed a five-day course into two days, and did a great job of it." Among the topics covered by Jepsen, a research associate at the Troy Laboratory, were technology trends, application basics, environment/industrial hygiene and emissions, and electrostatic/rotary atomizers. "We got a sense of not only the knowledge DuPont Performance Coatings has, but the passion it has for this industry," said Dotterer. ©2002 Collision Repair Industry INSIGHT | FEATURED INSIGHT Supports the NABC! |
