Business Tools | Monday October 14 Taiwan's Tong Yang Receives ISO 14001In August of this year, Bureau Veritas Quality International, Inc (BVQI) of Jamestown, New York certified the plastics division of Tong Yang Industry Co., Inc. (OTN) as compliant with the internationally recognized Environmental Management System, ISO 14001. OTN received ISO 9002 certification in 1996 and QS 9000 certification in 1997.Tong Yang is the largest manufacturer of aftermarket crash parts in Taiwan. Its product line includes both plastic and sheet metal parts. In the early 1990s Tong Yang's management made a decision to establish a manufacturing facility in the US. The goal was realized in 1998 when TYGP opened its doors in McKinney, Texas, about 45 minutes north of Dallas. This location was chosen because it is centrally located in the US. TYGP obtained ISO/QS 9000 certification earlier this year. Like it's Taiwanese counterpart, the McKinney facility uses advanced injection machines, automatic painting and welding robots, to make products for the US market. Approximately 70 people are employed at the Texas factory and Tong Yang's US Wholesale Customer Service office, Trans AmeriCAR, housed in the same building. A Vehicle Test Fit Center was established at the McKinney facility in 2000 so that vehicle test fits could be done to assist with new tooling development as well as to address customer feedback. Using CAPA/Entela procedures TYGP measures and records technical information from an undamaged vehicle. Comparative technical data is used to verify product fit before mass production. As of September 2002 Tong Yang had 116 CAPA certified bumper fascias, eighty-one of which went through the certification process during calendar year 2002. All CAPA certified bumpers have undergone extensive material testing, as well as vehicle test fitting. Tong Yang's Tainan facility was among the early manufacturers to sign on to the MQVP program, in April 2001. TYGP in McKinney joined the program in August 2002. Said Simon Chen, Vice President of TKY, the sheet metals division of Tong Yang Group company and the man who, as Chairman of TABPA, encouraged the organization to participate in joint meetings with SCRS and CAA in California in 1998, "Tong Yang is committed to supplying high quality products to the US marketplace. We understand that collision repairers need to have confidence in the products they use. We aim to meet that need and provide consistent, high quality parts to the US market." ©2002 Collision Repair Industry INSIGHT | FEATURED
