Business Tools | Thursday January 30 PPG Partners with Mentors at WorkPPG Automotive Refinish and Mentors @ Work have joined forces to provide the collision repair industry with the framework to set up its own mentoring program specifically tailored for the collision industry. This program is designed to assist shops with training and developing the skills of new automotive technicians using a web-based training and tracking system. Businesses can use this program not only to attract, train, and retain new employees, but also to help current employees increase their skills and move into positions of greater responsibility.PPG is offering a special discount for their customers that wish to take advantage of the program. The program offers one-on-one consulting to assist shops with setting up and evaluating in-house training programs. This one-on-one support is followed up by the on-line system. According to Chris Noll at Village Collision in Boston, Mass., "Getting good help has always been a problem, especially since fewer technicians are joining the industry. It's very difficult to develop your own program for training new employees. We've been trying to put something together that works for years. Mentors @ Work gives you all the tools you need and provides you with a roadmap to get your employees trained and accelerate the learning curve. You have to be realIy committed to the program to make it work, but if you do, it's a wonderful program." Mentors @ Work's highly trained staff will walk shop managers and mentors through the program step-by-step. All learning modules are accompanied by audio CD's for easy comprehension of program content. Seminars are also available to owners and managers as well as new technicians. "PPG has endorsed this program because we believe this is a service that can help our customers start and manage an effective mentoring program for technicians that results in technicians learning the job faster and the shop retaining employees longer," said Russ Boston, director of training for PPG Automotive Refinish. "The program provides progressive training modules and assessments that assist shops in monitoring and evaluating employee/mentor progression every two weeks. This system enables shops to determine an ROI between the employee/mentor, as well as the overall performance of the mentoring program. "The program is available to any shop that is serious about improving their training program and teaching employees how to improve their skills," Boston added. "The ultimate goal of the program would be for a shop technician to complete the program and become a mentor." ©2003 Collision Repair Industry INSIGHT | FEATURED
