DuPont Performance Coatings Contributes to Corporation’s Reduced Environmental Footprint

DuPont decreased its releases to air, water, land and underground injection wells by 12 percent in 2001 versus 2000, according to data provided to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its Toxic Release Inventory (TRI). The decrease was due primarily to reducing air emissions at the source and reducing nitrate compounds in wastewater discharges.

The Performance Coatings business of DuPont (DPC) has played a role in the company’s continued reduction of hazardous emissions to land and air. From a base year of 1990, DPC has reduced total hazardous waste disposal from locations operated since 1990 by 29 percent. If these numbers are indexed on a percentage of waste per gallon of paint produced, the reduction during this period is 59 percent.

Additionally, DPC has reduced VOC emissions from plants in operation since 1990 by a factor of 69.5 percent. On the basis of pound of waste per gallon of paint produced, the reduction is 80 percent.

“This performance demonstrates a commitment to ‘Sustainable Growth’ -- growth that is accompanied by a reduction of the environmental footprint of DuPont products and services,” said Robert Young, environmental and product stewardship manager for DuPont Automotive Finishes.

Reducing its environmental footprint is an essential component of DuPont’s strategy to achieve sustainable growth, according to Paul Tebo, DuPont vice president – Safety, Health and Environment. "While we are pleased to note the progress we are making,” he added, “it is important to know that we remain focused on our goal of zero waste and emissions."

Since 1987, DuPont has reduced its releases by 79 percent, even though production increased by more than 35 percent. Some 286 new compounds were added to the EPA's TRI reporting list in 1995.
