Kansai Paint and DuPont to End Auto Paint Tie-Up

Kansai Paint Co. and E.I. du Pont Nemours and Co. will break off their alliance in automotive paint as the U.S. chemical giant strengthens its ties with another Japanese firm, according to a report in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

Kansai Paint and DuPont had formed the alliance in 1990. Through a joint venture established in the U.S., Kansai Paint sold paint to Japanese automakers there, while DuPont supplied non-Japanese automakers there.

The change is believed to be largely due to DuPont's joint operations in Japan with Shinto Paint Co. and DuPont's bolstered domestic sales of automotive paint.

According to the report, Kansai Paint is looking for a new partner to expand its share in overseas markets, with foreign firms, such as major paint companies Akzo Nobel NV of the Netherlands and BASF AG of Germany, under consideration.

With its new partner, Kansai Paint hopes to cultivate the Asian market, where demand for automotive paint is expected to grow, the Nikkei reported.

Meanwhile, DuPont plans to expand operations in Japan by strengthening ties with Shinto Paint through the exchange of experts.
