Business Tools | Tuesday October 5 NABC Donates over $3,000 Worth of Used Cellular PhonesNABC’s drive to collect old and used cellular phones was a complete success according to Chuck Sulkala, Executive Director of the National Auto Body Council.“We asked all industry participants to bring their used cellular phones to the CIC meeting which was held on August 4 in conjunction with the ICAR Annual Meeting,” said Sulkala. “This was our first attempt at putting something such as this together,” stated Barry Dorn, NABC member and project coordinator for this effort. “All in all, we were able to collect sixty-one phones. These, along with their accessories were valued at $50.00 apiece, for a total donation of $3,050.” “The phones were donated to the HopeLine Phone Recycling Program via Verizon Wireless,” commented Dorn. “Depending on the condition and age of the phones, Verizon will do one of three things,” continued Dorn. “They might activate the phone, as is, so it can be used to call 911. The phone might be refurbished so that it’s usable and activate the phone so they can call 911. Or the phones might be sold and the revenue generated will be used to purchase new phones.” “The end result is that the phones are donated to victims of domestic abuse,” Sulkala went on. “This program won Verizon Wireless the Mt. Sinai Silver Whistle Award for the company's longtime commitment to domestic violence awareness and prevention through its HopeLine program.” “I hope the final recipients of these phones will appreciate the generosity of the people in the collision industry,” concluded Sulkala. “It is nice to be able to turn something, used phones, which have marginal value as they collect dust in a drawer, into something that has the potential to save a life. On behalf of NABC and the Collision Industry Foundation I thank everyone who participated in this program." ©2004 Collision Repair Industry INSIGHT | FEATURED
