CCAR Adds New Course for NY State to S/P2 Online Training

The Coordinating Committee For Automotive Repair has announced the release of new course for its “S/P2” online training that addresses New York State’s new Automotive Refinishing Air Pollution Control Requirement Changes, which will impact all New York shops and schools.

The new course is now available at no additional cost to S/P2 users – auto body shops, as well as collision repair training programs at schools – in New York.

As of January 1, 2005, auto body shops in the state of New York must comply with the revised coating standards of New York State’s Air Pollution Control Regulation, Title 6 of the Official Compilation of Codes, Rules and Regulations of the State of New York, Part 228 (6 NYCRR Part 228).

“We knew this upcoming change would affect many people, and we needed to help,” said Robert G. Stewart, CCAR President, in announcing the new course. “We created this additional course for the New York shops and schools, so they will have the education to be in compliance with the new standards by January 1.”

Part 228 requires businesses that perform surface coating processes to use certain equipment and materials designed to reduce solvent emissions. Additionally, all auto body shops, except for small operations located in Upstate New York, are required to obtain a registration with NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The new online class is available to all New York schools and subscribing S/P2 shops.

CCAR developed S/P2 in accord with U.S. EPA and OSHA standards, which require that shop personnel and students be trained at least annually on safety and environmental regulations. An annual industry-wide review of the S/P2 training includes representatives from independent repair businesses, instructors, OEMs, insurance companies and government agencies.

S/P2 is available free of charge to automotive training programs. More than 1,400 schools have enrolled, making S/P2 available to a student audience of more than 118,000. For shops, the business edition of S/P2 is available for a $299 annual subscription per facility. The S/P2 courseware tracks technician/student progress through the training, grades tests and is constantly updated as changes occur in federal and state laws.

CCAR, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, also operates “CCAR-GreenLink,” the National Environmental Compliance Assistance Center for Automotive Repair, in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency [EPA].
