Business Tools | Wednesday November 28 Capital Community College and Travelers Announce Launch of Education InitiativeTravelers has partnered with Capital Community College to launch a new education access initiative, Capital Crossroads to Careers. The program will build a bridge to college and careers in insurance and the financial services industry for educationally underserved students.“Travelers is proud to announce this new education initiative,” said Kate Preston, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, Travelers. “We are committed to increasing access to higher education in the Hartford area and giving students the opportunity to excel. Our businesses will benefit from the ability to recruit from a diverse pool of talented candidates, keeping Hartford a strong center for insurance and financial services.” Demographic changes indicate the largest population increase will come from communities currently underserved by educational institutions and, according to the Department of Labor, 90 percent of the fastest growing jobs in the country require post-secondary education. Travelers will fund the initiative through a $150,000 grant as well as an additional commitment of funds and in-kind resources the company estimates will be in excess of an additional $150,000 each year. The program begins January 2008 with 15 Capital Community College students. The students will benefit from the advice of an academic advisor and professional mentor, funds for tuition and books, a variety of networking opportunities, exposure to the insurance industry and ultimately a competitive advantage for career success. “Every fall hundreds of Capital students become the first member of their family to attend college, “said Dr. Calvin E. Woodland, president, Capital Community College. “In their quest for a degree, many confront challenges that are truly daunting. We are grateful that Travelers is opening doors to higher education and career success that otherwise would not exist for these students.” The announcement was made on Thursday, November 15, at Capital’s third Changing Lives Gala, a fundraising event celebrating student and alumni success stories. Travelers is a Fortune 100 company, with 2006 revenues of $25.09 billion and total assets of $113.76 billion. The company has approximately 33,000 employees. Capital Community College, located in the center of Hartford, is an open-door educational institution and the only public undergraduate institution in Hartford.
