Our feature this month takes a look at the advanced technology packed into our 21st century vehicle. The automobile’s Black Box capabilities and potentials remind me of my science fiction fan days. (Actually, I’m STILL a big fan!) Shades of a "Big Brother is watching" type of futuristic society flicker before my eyes while reading about the vehicle crash information that can be automatically transmitted by cutting-edge telematics technology. As with most new things, probably dating from the first prehistoric campfire, what some members of the human race call wonderful advances of civilization others deem evil and mysterious. We are amazed by the possibilities presented by Black Box technology and yet a bit fearful of still another example of the modern world’s ability to make the private public. For now it would seem that the benefits out-weigh privacy concerns and possible future misuse of information gathered from vehicle telematics units. INSIGHT will keep an eye out for further developments. Being the politically correct woman that I am, by the way, I prefer to think of Big Brother as Elder Sibling, anyway. An exciting agreement about information sharing has just been reached between automobile manufacturers and independent repair facilities, a longtime goal of ASA members. (See page 19.) ASA Board Chairman Dan Frohlich understandably waxed poetic about the commitment made by carmakers to provide the same service and training to both independents and dealers. He commented, "One cannot overstate the historical significance of this covenant." More good news is around this month during NABC’s PRIDE Month. In spite of a less than golden economy, our Collision Repair Industry has a right to brag about our generosity and firm commitment to helping those who need a hand. Several individuals and organizations are mentioned on our back page, and we are proud of the work done by countless others not listed here. A big reminder to all segments of the industry: If you have not already done so, register for NACE 2002 now: Dallas in December! oFeedbackHave a comment about this article?
