Learn to Keep Up

by Karen Kilbane

Summer was here and gone in the blink of an eye this year, and thankfully, I am not describing a hurricane’s eye. So far, for now, hurricane season has been a virtual no-show, a blessing for so many communities still trying to get back on their feet after last year’s devastation. Insurers and relief agencies are still working with home owners and businesses in southern states toward a slow but determined recovery.

The back-to-school month of September is a good time to knuckle down and hit the books. In our Collision Repair Industry there are always things to learn, and changes to try, and tests to take. Our feature article this month offers us a crash course in the latest information available to the industry. There will be no written exam, but hopefully you will learn some facts that will be useful in the real world of the workplace.

Speaking of education, after months of tracking the fate of legislation proposing the renewal of the Perkins Voca-tional and Technical Educa-tional Act, we can all applaud the president’s signature on the act’s renewal (See page 4). The funding of technical education is crucial to the Collision Repair Industry’s future.

Did you ever use flashcards in school to learn the “drill?” ASA’s Collision Division has devised a similar set of “quick start” guides for automakers’ repair information websites (See page 10). These little study guides aim to make the journey on the manufacturers’ information highway a bit smoother and more direct.

The big learning experience of 2006 is really just around the corner at NACE, scheduled for November in Las Vegas. The newest equipment, best information, and most knowledgeable people in the industry will be in one exciting place. Do your homework today. Register for NACE online at: www.NACEexpo.com.
