Tuning In: To Changing Times

by Karen Kilbane

Change is often a difficult experience in life. We are generally creatures of habit, reluctant to try something different, to learn something new, to take action.

It takes a certain amount of determination and concentration to be a worthwhile instrument of change, and in our Collision Repair Industry, as in the rest of the world, it usually takes a hefty dose of mutual respect and information sharing. Games of placing-blame and shouting-pouting and tuning out any voices that are not completely the same as ours will not even get us as far as it did in kindergarten - right into a time-out. In this fast-paced world, there is no time for a time-out. We have no spare time to waste and no spare bottom-line money to waste.

I write all this not as a prophet of doom - far from it - because several practical solutions are right here. All we have to do is read about what is happening in the industry and take action.

Legislation has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives (See page 4.) to require the disclosure of all information pertaining to the fair market value and safety of damaged vehicles. This kind of legislative action is welcome, and deserves our support. Let’s remember September’s legislative success, when Collision Repair Industry associations helped get the renewal of the Perkins Vocational and Tech-nical Education Act.

Nowadays it is more essential than ever to make a commitment to get informed and get involved in the business world and in the local and national community. Ask any of the recipients of the NABC PRIDE Awards if they have been able to make a difference. I am confident you will hear a strong “Yes” from them all.

NACE 2006 is right around the corner. If you have not reserved your spots there in Las Vegas the first week of November, do it today before time runs out on your chance to learn and change and make a difference.
