Where To Now?

by Karen Kilbane

This month’s feature article is a must-read for every Collision Repair Industry participant who tries to anticipate trends and changes and get into a good position to brace for or to embrace changes based on a sensible business plan.

It is always interesting to me to learn a new word. “Disintermediation” is defined as the removal of the middleman from a business activity. This concept has been embraced by some players in the insurance industry, and will probably spread.

Our special feature this month is in response to many requests from readers for more information about “Going Lean,” our feature topic from April. Read Steven Feltovich’s expert discussion on page 11 this month, and look forward to part two in the August issue.

Legal stories are big news this month. See page 15 for details about the New Jersey Supreme Court’s ruling in the lead paint lawsuit that saves paint manufacturers huge amounts of compensation dollars.

Breaking news out of Kansas City hours before this issue of INSIGHT went to print is that a Jackson County judge has tossed out the jury verdict against American Family Mutual Insurance Company. The jury verdict in the aftermarket auto parts class action case originally held American Family resonsible to the tune of $17 million. See page 16 for the story. INSIGHT will report more developments next month.

Americans are still hitting the highways for vacation driving, despite record prices at the gas pumps this year. According to Allstate’s “America’s Best Drivers Report (See page 13) head out to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, home of the safest drivers in the U.S. Just please drive carefully!
