Focus on Cars

by Karen Kilbane

Our feature this month offers some useful information about the work being done by the National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL). Three of the hottest topics that the Collision Repair Industry is facing now are also on the table for NCOIL. At its last meeting, held in July in Philadelphia, airbag fraud and use of salvage airbags, non-OEM parts, and steering were discussed.

This month we are all watching what is happening with the government-sponsored Cash for Clunkers Program. Here in Ohio, the Ford Focus has become the hottest new car, and many new car dealers are actually running out of fuel-efficient compact cars - a kind of nice problem to have, really.

I-CAR has named six individuals to manage its new regions, created to achieve better efficiency and to provide more accessible programs for technicians. See page 12 for the complete story.

See page 13 for a request from ASA’s Collision Division for shop involvement in its continuing time study aimed at feather, edge, and fill issues. Your input is needed. The project kit is available at the ASA website.

Congratulations are in order for the Coordinating Committee For Automotive Repair (CCAR). More than 1.2 million online examinations for its Safety and Pollution Preven-tion (S/P2) program were administered to automotive training students during the 2008-2009 school year. Read more on page 8.

I am amazed that Summer is nearly over! I for one barely left my own backyard this year, but I am curious to see statistics on whether or not Americans really scaled back vacations this year. There are hints that the U.S. economy has already begun to rebound, so, if you have not taken a week off yet, perhaps you can pencil in some time for NACE 2009, scheduled for the first week of November in Las Vegas.
