It has been my observation over the past several years that our Collision Repair Industry participants usually try to hammer out solutions to problems and concerns without resorting to court cases or new law proposals. There are some good reasons for this behavior. The primary reason most likely is that insurers have expensive lawyers on staff with loads of time to appear at hearings, to write motions, and to lobby state and national legislatures. Collision repair facility owners have been more than a bit hesitant to face off in the legal and legislative arenas because they do not have attorneys and lobbyists on staff, nor do they have deep pockets and lots of time on their hands. However, there were several legal cases during 2009 that may have slight or significant impact on our industry. Read our first feature article of 2010 for more information. There is good news for consumers on page 5 this month. Carfax has partnered with the national automotive aftermarket service and retail chain Pep Boys. Carfax will add millions of service records from all Pep Boy locations to its database, making vehicle service records even more comprehensive for used car buyers across the U.S. In insurer news (See page 16.) both the Allstate Foundation and the Nationwide Insurance Foundation have donated thousands of dollars to aid the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Both foundations are also planning to match employees’ donations, too. Our popular Market Watch Summary of rates and allowances for 2009 is on pages 12 and 13.
